Off to New York

No time to take the train but it is off to New York today for meetings and a few days of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

And, as the otherwise dapper gentleman in the Esquire illustration is realizing as he sees the date on his wristwatch, yesterday was the end of straw hat season. It is all felt hats all the time from now until mid-May in the northern hemisphere, for those of us who pay attention to that type of thing.

are you attending fashion week?!? i thought it too young and fashion forward for your liking - is there something missing that might be worth going to?

Why yesterday and not Labor Day?

Hello,

If these questions have been asked before, I apologize. I looked, but did not see them . . .

I think (based on what I have seen in past pictures/drawings) that the wearing of hats by men tended to coincide with the use by men of some type of pomade/brilliantine.

1. Didn't the use of these products ruin the hat felt?

2. Did men usually walk around with "hat hair" after removing their hats?

3. Relying on Mad Men (a favorite of mine), it appears every man went to bed without first showering. Didn't their hair products ruin their pillow cases?

I realize none of these are earth shattering questions, but they did pique my interest.

Thanks,

Sam

Not an expert by any means, but I'll try to answer your questions, Salvatore:

1. Didn't the use of these products ruin the hat felt?
Many hats have a lining to avoid the hat being ruined by pomades or sweat stains.

2. Did men usually walk around with "hat hair" after removing their hats?
Probably. Though with the proper application of pomade that wouldn't be much of a problem, if any. Esther Williams had a combination of vaseline and baby oil in her hair (warning: will take forever to get it out of your hair) to keep it in place while she was swimming/underwater. If it could work for that, it should work fine for hair under a hat.

3. Relying on Mad Men (a favorite of mine), it appears every man went to bed without first showering. Didn't their hair products ruin their pillow cases?
Probably so. But pillow cases are cheap to replace.
And there was also the 'do rag. Now it's worn as a sort of fashion statement - back then, it was to protect your pillow from your hair product(s).
