The First Moleskins of the Season

Yesterday was was the season's first truly cool day and it called for a pair of moleskin trousers. The short, velvet-like nap on cotton moleskin traps air next to the body so in a 16 ounce/480 gram weight it wears warm.

They were worn with a tweed shirt-jacket over a flannelette shirt, a silk scarf, a tweed hat and tan Norwegian style bluchers.

Consistent with the change in temperature, two linen suits went into storage and were replaced by flannel in lighter weights. The weather is still too mild for the 15 ounce/450 gram stuff but cool enough for a 360 gram/12 ounce weave. Today's visit to tailor Peter Harvey in the City is likely to require it.

Thanks,

Out of curiosity, Will, what led to your photoshopping out the background? That's very unusual for you.

Love the shirt-jacket. Is that the same material as your topcoat?

Sammy, most shirtmakers will make you a shirt jacket but if you want Harris you'll probably need to provide the cloth.

Charles, I'm experimenting with an indoor setup so I'm not dependent on sunlight for photos during the cloudy season. I may not use it much but that backdrop is muslin.

And Horatio, that's a different herringbone. THe overcoat in process is brown and black.

Pardon a noob's question, but how do you go about getting trousers made of moleskin? I pass through London fairly frequently and could likely have some made...but the question would be, where?

Gary, all the tailors have moleskin available to them. Cloth houses Scabal, Holland & Sherry and Huddersfield each have a selection.

And trousers are mostly straight seams so there are a lot of candidates to make them. You might ask for recommendations on the Style Forum or Ask Andy About Clothes forums.
