Standing Out Without Shocking

Men in the public eye sometimes have reason to dress so that they stand out, and that does not mean they have to dress to shock. Consider, for example, the late French actor Philippe Noiret at the Cannes Film Festival for a photocall for the film Les Cotelettes in 2003. Brilliant, isn't he?

Noiret's father was in the clothing trade and that may have given him an advantage over most of us. But he's not doing anything particularly original in the photograph, is he? It is simply the combination of somewhat unusual classic elements that make him stand out: cream suit, spectator shoes, a bow tie and a fedora, on one man, at one time.

Look at Noiret. Look at his peers standing next to him. Look at a photo of Johnny Depp (well, maybe not Mr. Depp). Noiret wins.

Great photo! I would mention a further item in addition to the shoes and fedora, to wit Mr Noiret's inseparable cigar!

An adapted classic but not only rehashing old examples or stereotypes, a subtly creative twist and towering in style over the others, without any arrogance or pretense - a gentleman.

You really have it out for Depp.

Mr. Depp is a tremendous talent. I don't care what style he might choose but I would like him to dress as well as he acts.

It's always interesting that when you dress well or see someone well dressed that they're just wearing (more or less) what everyone else is - coat, pants, shirt and tie (in this case the hat as well, but he stands out even without it).

It's also interesting that were one of those other men to don the same outfit, it would not have the same impact.

I think what's truly coming through at the end of the day is that he's wearing an outfit that's (a) put together (i.e. some thought about the overall impact of the combination of garments); and (b) an authentic expression of his personal sense of style.

People's business: great points.

I'd add: c) a respect for oneself, that translates to a respect for others around you
