On occasions when a necktie might be too much, accompany a navy blue blazer with a Pacific blue ascot with navy dots and a paisley silk pocket square in gold, navy and green on a burgundy ground. A blue royal oxford shirt, gray flannel trousers and brogued brown bluchers complete a perfect picture.

It seems odd to me to note, but I was just this morning thinking of just such a square as you have pictured Will, although I must admit a *pacific* blue ascot never even entered my apparently limited imagination. But to do to this glorious square the indignity of a navy blazer, well, that just leaves me speechless. Rest of outfit great though.
i like to wear silk mufflers or scarfs, when not feeling like wearing a shirt and tie.
there seems to be an awful lot of people wearing ascots out there.
don't know if a navy blazer with a pacific blue ascot would look very ingenious, but perhaps it looks good.
from where comes the above distaste for the navy blazer?
I think there is not a single person in all of Philadelpia whom I have seen with an ascot, except in costume. They would look affected in the extreme. They give hat-wearers a bad name (and I am struggling with hats).
David, I know of two types of people these days. The vast majority do not know what an ascot is and have no prejudices against them. The few that do know what they are generally are interested in clothes and wear them themselves.
The Ascot is still alive and well amongst South Asian males, you see a couple at most dinner parties usually.
I started wearing ascots this year, and no one has looked at me askance. On the contrary, I usually get compliments, though more often than not, it's for my fedora or overall outfit.
As for the alleged affectedness of ascots, look at pictures of Cary Grant in an ascot, and see if he looks as though he has an air of affectation.
P.S.: I love the Pacific blue ascot, and think it would look great with a navy blazer. I'd choose light blue or white for the shirt, or maybe even pink.
Hi, Will.
I think you would enjoy this old report about British Guards officers from and 1953 Life magazine:

Regards.
Dear Will,
Is it too late to enquire which firm do purvey this great looking hank?
Best,
Luis
I'm with David B. I know what ascots are. I have six...maybe seven of them...and I don't wear them. I bought them because I loved the colors and the quality of the silk.
I'll hold onto them until my hair turns grey and then I'll grow a little Ted Turner moustache and break 'em outta storage but not until then. And just because Cary Grant can wear an ascot doesn't mean I can.
There are also some charming neigborhoods in Phila where an ascot could get you in serious trouble. Unless you look too old to beat up.
Then it appears that there is good reason to stay out of Philadelphia, regardless of what the name of the city means.
