Since gray cloth as you know is woven from a combination of black and white threads, a reliable way to complement a gray city suit is with the same colors. Or, technically, the same color and lack of color.
In the photograph, a gray herringbone suit combined with a light blue Chambray shirt, white dots on black knit necktie, and a gray-blue silk square with black dots. The hidden button down collar of the shirt is the day's sprezzatura.

This is a great look Will. This is the kind of thing I try to achieve in the office, except in my case I would substitute a solid (or polka dot) silk or wool/silk number for the knit tie.
I love this city look. Would you recommend black shoes? Monks maybe?
Great outfit. I particularly like how the pocket square plays off of, yet does not coordinate with, the tie.
It's funny how sometimes, sticking to a highly constrained pallet of colors actually gives you more freedom to create a stunning ensemble.
I feel like it is a nice look, however, I would have refrained from wearing polka dots both in your pocket AND around your neck...
