Someone rather famously called them suitable only for theater impresarios but the Astrakhan overcoat collar was worn by Winston Churchill and the Duke of Windsor.
Astrakhan collars are generally found on double breasted Ulster style overcoats when they are seen at all. The Ulster is a predecessor to the polo coat and has many of the same features including sleeve cuffs. Like the polo, versions intended for city wear have flapped pockets and are beltless.
For me the Astrakhan question arises in the context of whether the Ulster style coat that is to be made from the cloth in the photo should have a fur collar. On balance I think not, but I am tempted and I need to make up my mind before Peter Harvey's visit next week.

Great coat! "no" on the fur unless you spend time in Siberia - the coat is gonna look great with or without it -so it's down to functionality.
What a coincidence.
I have just seen this photograph of Vinton Cerf, Google vicepresident.

This coat looks as if it came off a Russian grand duke. The styling is way too tailored. Take a look through some of these books of bw illustrations of Edwardian menswear. They are full of illustrations of looser cut coats with Astrakhan collars that look fantastic although given the climate I don't see much opportunity to wear one in SF.
As a follow up I always thought an "Ulster" was one of those tweed coats with a cape much favored by Dr Watson.
Surely you can have them make an attachable/ detachable fur collar?
I saw an Astrakhan collar coat at Loro Piana in SF last year, it was unbelievable.
if I had my druthers, which you do, Will, you should get one to break up the mundane.
Splendid coat! Thanks for the peek. Follow your heart's desire. Just don't wear it to any PETA meetings!
Do it! If it's cold enough to raise the collar once it touches your face you will undoubtedly be left with one word to describe the sensation "luxury"
I don't think you should go for it for fear of the Gulag, and how it would look with that otherwise grand brownish cloth, but what do I know.
Love astrakhan, love the idea of a fur collar, but, like JC, I'm not sure that this cloth will work with astrakhan.
If, when wearing fur, any intolerant PETA member accosts you, just look aghast while you tell them it's very high-tech artificial fur. There's no need to tell the truth to someone like that.
"There's no need to tell the truth to someone like that."
.....some people feel strongly about trapping animals and it can be fairly awful by any criteria...I'm not one of them but they're entitled to their opinion surely?
Of course they're entitled to their opinion. However, I don't think they're entitled to throw red paint onto someone wearing fur--but they do.
Hence my caveat: "intolerant PETA member."
"However, I don't think they're entitled to throw red paint onto someone wearing fur--but they do."
.....Of course they are not but "accosting" is not necessarily throwing red.... it could be handing out leaflets
