I had been looking for some cloth for a light weight odd jacket and settled on a swatch of black and white seersucker that looked as though it would make up well for summer evenings in the city. Then this photo of it came along.
It may only be that slanted pockets on city clothes are not to my taste and a slouchier look suits me better. It may be that for me the coat should be paired with dark gray trousers rather than black. But on second thought that swatch is crossed off the list.
So it is back to the drawing board.

....Very wise.....and one of your great looking "slouchier" shirt jackets sounds a better fit for summer evenings in SF.
I also have been looking for something similar, an over dyed seersucker (Navy on Navy) or something tonal (Navy on Black) / (Navy on Brown) With the same intention summer casual evening wear. Let us know if you find something good!
Wow, that is an ugly jacket! If you're willing to go seersucker for evenings, have you thought about linen or a silk-linen blend?
If you're feeling heretical, just do what I did: mohair!
I will probably get another linen suit, or perhaps another cotton if the one I have in the pipeline proves to wear well. But neither of those would be patterned and I had hoped to find something for summer that didn't look like an imitation tweed.
Perhaps black and white is a bit too stark? It doesn't help that it's paired with black trousers, as you say, but I tend to find that not-quite-black and not-quite-white look better.
Whatever the reason, I think you've made the right choice by not going with it.
The cut is wonderful and, speaking personally, I like the slanted pockets (historically, was this simply for ease of access?), but he does rather look like a human barcode.
