It turns out that the temperature falls to near-freezing at 5,500 feet (1,675 meters) in Southern California in mid-May, a fact that it never occurred to me to check when I packed summer clothes for a visit to the UCLA conference center in said mountains last week. After all, I have lived in California for half of my life. What was there to check?
My host for the occasion was Jesse Thorn, co-host of the blog Put This On among other accomplishments, and a man appropriately dressed for the temperature in a corduroy suit. I on the other hand am only marginally warm enough at mid-day in lightweight gabardine trousers and a linen shirt jacket.
Always check the weather in advance. As if you needed me to tell you that.

Agreed. I could see this morning there is still snow slightly higher then that. Some places still have spring skiing, I believe.
Will, I like the shirt jacket.
I ordered a shirt jacket from a local shirtmaker, but his version was more suited as a shirt worn outside the trousers.
I might set him to work making one after your model.
I recall reading that you used a 14 ounce linen for your jacket. Do you think that a Loro Piana linen at less than 10 ounces would have the sufficient body? Or would it be as limp as a regular shirt?
Thanks.

P.S. How was Lake Arrowhead? It is mentioned in "Mildred Pierce" as well as some other films of the era as being a nice resort area.
Mark, I have a shirt from 10 ounce linen. It's not a jacket. More of an overshirt.
Lake Arrowhead is ten miles up a mountain road in the San Bernadino National Forest. Once you're there it's beautiful, but very built up.
Well at least you looked great, Will :).
I always pack my silk longjohns, from LLBean, inexpensive, take up no space, add over 10 degrees of warmth yet don't overheat you indoors
