One Man Stood Out

There were several well-dressed men at the Vanity Fair and Gucci Party Honoring Martin Scorsese at the Hotel Du Cap Eden Roc this past Saturday. In fact, I believe I saw four in what was otherwise a sea of over-long trousers, shirt sleeves, jacket sleeves and neckties. A couple of Italian film producers in impeccable evening clothes and the guest of honor tied for second place, but one man stood out. George Hamilton.

Yes, some might quibble with Hamilton's choice of a striped suit for evening, but everything he is wearing fits, is shaped well and is in good taste. This at a party where there were shirts unbuttoned to the navel (Cuba Gooding, Jr.), a white dinner jacket with black lapels (Tommy Hilfiger), and Lapo Elkann. The ladies were stunning though.

Thank you Mr. Hamilton.

Are the business origins of the pinsripe suit what deem it inappropriate for evening wear?

Will,

Great suit, where do you suppose he got it made?

Also, is that at contrast collar shirt?

I ran into George Hamilton last fall on Madison Avenue in the 70's and he was incredibly gracious (and, of course, well-dressed). His shoes were quietly tasteful in the best tradition of London bespoke.

He knows how not to take life too seriously - his memoir is light and full of hilarious stories. Highly recommended.

I don't think his suit Jacket fits. Unless he has buttoned it incorrectly. It seems to pull and doesn't lay flat. It looks like an old DB suit. Probably when he was a bit slimmer.

I'd like to see what Lapo was wearing. I appreciate his daring choices.

I also had the pleasure of meeting G.H. about 10 years ago on [what used to be at least] the MTM and Golden Fleece floor at Brooks' Madison Avenue store - the floor was empty but for a few salesmen, tailor, and the two of us shopping. He seemed to be known by the BB staff and was a thoroughly friendly, charming man, who seemed to enjoy holding court, and he looked just as tastefully put together as always.

Yes, Levi.

I had heard that he told someone has been using a tailor in Los Angeles, but I don't know who. The suit in the photo looks English to me. And the shoes are either Foster or Cleverley. The shirt is white.

Tony, I think what you are seeing in the jacket is the effect of having the woman lean into him with her arm around his waist at the back.

Mr. Elkann was was not particularly daring. He was wearing a blue linen dinner suit with black lapels, and a white shirt worn tieless with the collar out.

We could all learn from Mr. Hamilton on so many levels. Hopefully many of today's stars will take a couple of lessons and age as gracefully. (paging Mr. Clooney)

No doubt the best reason for a jacket to be pulled askance.

I interviewed Hamilton a few years ago for the article. Of course, we spoke extensively about clothes.

You can read the piece here:

Robert, your story says it all. George Hamilton is simply one of the best dressed men in the United States. I wish there were more who followed his example.

His D.B only has two buttons=Cooler than cool.
The two button front D:B was designed for the Semi Drape. The best D.B style of all

I'm not sure I follow. It isn't a 6x2, but a 6x1?
