Where Does the Cell Phone Go?

The heat of summer is the one time of year when a man may rightly consider the option to go without a jacket (once he has taken that step he might as well get comfortable and go sockless too). Of course, the short sleeved man in the illustration may have had his equerry carry his things but that is hardly an option for most of us.

When it comes to warm weather office dress, contemporary Australians have probably taken things as far as modesty allows with their equatorial ensembles of short sleeve shirts, Bermuda shorts and a necktie that pays homage to the suit (they do wear socks), but they are not the only ones to decide that even a lightweight jacket is too much. The problem with this sort of thing is where a man puts his cell phone. Money, keys and a couple plastic cards will fit in his trousers. Perhaps a handkerchief as well. But the cell phone is an inconvenient bulge in a pocket that argues for a separate bag, an accessory that grows in importance for middle aged men who must also carry reading glasses.

Now shirt and trouser dressing is common in San Francisco where the weather is usually mild, but instead of a bag many blue oxford shirt and khaki trousered men have opted for the belt pouch, a crime against aesthetics if not humanity itself. I do, however, digress. Oxford cloth is hardly a summer shirting and San Francisco rarely warm enough to justify leaving the jacket at home.

When a bag must be carried, two options that may not get the respect they deserve are the small portfolio in the city, where there is some presumption that the folder contains business papers or a clean shirt, and the tote at recreational sites like the beach, particularly when one is accompanied by a female or two so it appears as though he is merely a gentleman who has offered to carry the day's supplies.

Of course, as wardrobe problems go, this is hardly a challenge of the first magnitude. But it did touch 84 degrees (29C) inland yesterday for the first time this year. Wallet, cell phone and glasses were in a portfolio, and I was glad I had it.

I say ditch the cell phone. Who needs one, really?

A challenge indeed! I used to be the khaki trousers and shirt guy, but never felt comfortable with the "Batman belt" of phone clipped to my waist, not to mention the full pants pockets with keys, wallet etc. I started wearing suits more often and voila.... then came summers' heat. Perhaps a nice satchel is in my future.

We got along just fine without cell phones before. We can do so now.
Anything to avoid the ManPurse.

Will, I know you're on the other side of the world. But as a resident of the antipodes the only place I've seen a man in socks and shorts is the lawn bowls club (do you have lawn bowls in America? if you don't, i'll let you know now, it's for septuagenarians).

I grew up on the equator and I have to say, the look brings up many uncomfortably colonial connotations. On the other hand, my father's daily uniform for work was a short sleeved shirt, trousers (derr) and brogues/derbies/casualish shoes (never sans laces).

On the point of carrying things, it was just pre-mobiles, but I'm quite sure he was never a belt-loop-carrier. I think it was a matter of in the left pocket with keys and the right pocket had money/cards. Other than that, it'd be on his desk.

Anyhow, 2c hope it's an insight of some sort.

Solution: Wear a very light summer jacket or suit.

I just carry around the damn jacket with all the stuff in it when it's that hot....

Great illustration. From where does that drawing come, AA/Esky? I don't recall seeing that one before and it looks drawn on top of some photo, or something. Too bad can't read the text.

If pants are cut properly, an iPhone will slide in a front pocket without making too much of a bulge.
As for the other things: keys should be kept at a minimum (also minimizes jangle), and reading glasses should go into a shirt pocket.
Anyway, I don't like the jacketless look, and I am Italian and know a few things about business attire in the heat...
Whatever you do, sacthels, man purses and the like are ugly (sorry Will, but I don't care how recherché and bespoke your is) and keeping a phone in a briefcase is impractical.

Even with a suit jacket, I struggle to carry everything and not have unsightly bulges. So to speak.

What with a hefty bunch of keys, a wallet, a phone and a handful of change, even a manpurse is starting to seem like a good option.

It's a good thing I don't smoke. Where on earth does one keep a lighter and a cigarette case amongst all the other junk?!

Will, what is the status of your small leather pouch project?
Best,

Carry a short wallet in your back right pocket and the phone in the back left. But don't forget to take it out when you sit down!

Hello Will,

I have to concurr with Theo, there are very few people in Australia that would wear short sleeve shirt, tie, bermuda shorts and long socks. Maybe tour bus drivers do it but anyone in business would be laughed out of the office for turning up in such an ensemble. I still wear a suit, long sleeve shirt and tie to the office in summer, generally I will carry the jacket but I make sure I have it with me if needed. When I was in banking back in the late 80's early 90's I had a boss that insisted that we walk through the door in a full suit and that we stayed that way the entire day. We even had to wear a jacket out the door to lunch and back in from lunch. You just got used to the heat. Mind you most other men in the city had their jacket on as well. It was just the done thing.

These days things are much more relaxed and most men here go sans tie in summer. Short sleeve shirts and ties always bring Dilbert to mind for me and so I wouldnt be caught dead wearing this. With the harsh Australian sun and skin cancer so prevalent most men still wear trousers and a long sleeve shirt in summer.

I don't know where you got the idea that we get about in shorts and long socks, but I really haven't seen that since the 70's. Perhaps you have been looking at old photo archives?

Cheers,

Peter

My apologies Peter. I freely admit that I haven't visited since the 80's, however there were plenty of shorts-wearing men around at that time.
