Suits and Socks, Installment XVIII

How many times have we heard the old saw about never wearing white socks with a suit? If pale hose were good enough for Cary Grant, and they were, they should be good enough for the rest of us. Unless the socks are athletic, of course.

Bresciani's white sea island cotton dress socks, a pair of red tassel slipons by SW1 and a tropical black and white houndstooth patterned suit. Above the waist, a light blue linen and cotton shirt, white linen pocket square and a black silk knit necktie. The shoes are not as brightly colored away from the spotlights but when wearing red shoes and white socks the rest of the day's clothing should be very restrained nonetheless.

No problem conceptually with paler hose teamed with darker pants but white is a bridge too far for me personally. Quite apart from the aesthetics, even if they are not actually sports socks they are going to be perceived as such by most people.

Looks good. Particularly appropriate for the summer season. More casual and relaxed than if you had chosen a darker pair.

First the leopard slippers, now this ... what's next?

Black shoes and white socks may be worn by the very rich and the very poor

The combination of pale socks and loafers was an innovation in American casual dress popularized by Gene Kelly from the mid-forties on. Invariably, he wore them with jeans and white t-shirts. They look out of place when worn with a suit.

Just because Grant wore them doesn't count for a great deal. Should I wear silk women's panties just because Grant did?

According to his biographers they were nylon, but why should anyone other than your partner care if you did?

Like Bruggagem Joe, I see this post as more of a "concept" than a "suggestion." But isn't that really the point? We should be inspired by great dressers and use their outfits as a springboard to create our own, rather than slavishly copy everything they do.

I choose to wear white/cream socks only with white or very pale pants, but I have some pale yellow socks that I love to pair with everything--on sunny summer days only, of course. They go especially well with my red-toned shoes, but work just as well with spectators.

i run a fashion consultancy sometimes and advise always against white socks unless with white trousers

I often wear yellow or pale blue socks in the summer teamed with khaki or Prince of Wales check, I think the effect is rather dashing.
