Flannels Are the Best Suits of All

Entering fall, we enter the time of the suit. For suits were developed in a cool climate after all, and the light-weight stuff only developed later. And for cool weather there is nothing better to look at and to wear than the flannel suit. Textured and comfortable, flannels are worn in solid colors, chalk stripes and, the best of the best, glen checks like the one worn by the young Francis Albert Sinatra in the photo.

Forget worsted flannel, that pallid imitation made to wear better and weave into lighter weights. The good stuff is 13 ounce/400 gram cloth and heavier so it drapes and keeps the wearer toasty for a walk across town. Have an oxford gray solid, a navy blue with a gray chalk stripe and a brown glen check or, for those that cannot quite bring themselves to wear brown in town, gray with some brown in the weave. That last pattern, by the way, was the favorite of the English kings for that part of the twentieth century when there was a king.

The true flannel devotee of course will not stop with three. There is the air force blue solid, the narrow chalk stripe in charcoal , the houndstooth in gray or brown and the brown spot effect as well as rarer patterns.  But six of them is a good number to my mind, for flannel suits are the best suits of all.

Wonderful cloth on young Frank. I would wear it with delight!

Another favorite, and rarely seen, is dark blue on white or light gray glen check.

That jacket looks great. I come up short, I think I have only four. Oxford gray, navy with blue windowpane, and brown glen check--but it does not look as comfortable as the jacket on Sinatra.

Oh, yes. Just yes, simply and forever, yes. The feel, the drape, the patterns.. the textures. I wish I lived in a perpetual autumn so I had no reason to have anything besides flannel suits and odd jackets.

Although I concede I would greatly miss linen.

My favorite as well, but you've got to be careful about heated offices. Flannel is great when the heating system breaks, but the rest of the time you melt.

but never wear blue flannel unless you want to look like doctor death, its a terrible colour, much better chalkstripe in blue flannel slightly lighter than true navy
