"Wanna know if a man is well dressed? Look down." So said the late George Frazier, author of The Art of Wearing Clothes, the 1960 article in Esquire that may have been the best thing ever written about mens' clothing. In today's ten minute podcast, shoe care professional Kealani Lada talks about how to keep leather shoes looking good for those times when people are going to be looking at them.
Kealani is uniquely qualified for this discussion. She is the General Manager West Coast of A Shine & Co., in my opinion the best shoe shine chain in the United States, and definitely the people that keep my shoes polished. And when she is not managing, Kealani is a brilliant polisher of shoes. Click on the player to listen to the interview.

She does a fine job, indeed. Carlos also does great work. They have a great crew there at the Embarcadero location.
I was visiting from Philadelphia last weekend and walking through on a Saturday and ran across Vince, working off hours to finish up some drop offs. He was kind enough to pull aside the rope. A great conversation and an even better shine. If only I had my other pair with me...
On looking at quality brogues it will be evident that the leather of the toecap is hard and shiny but the upper which flexes is more soft and flexible, often pebbled.
This would suggest to me that a truly top-grade bespoke polishing would require both cream and wax on the same shoe.
