A Muted Necktie

If there is anyone left on the planet who is not yet aware, San Francisco's Giants won baseball's World Series last night. And the visual I wish I had for today's post is a grab from the few seconds of video I saw of the Giant's winning pitcher, a young man with shoulder-length hair, arriving at the stadium wearing a navy blue suit, white shirt and a nicely knotted bow tie. Any reader who can send ASW a reasonably high-resolution and in-focus photo or video grab of that scene will receive a new Kent of England CC20 clothing brush with a retail value of $80.

Meandering about from alterations tailor to shoeshine stand before the game, I was experimenting with a muted Cappelli necktie in block stripes of dark red and blue gray. It was difficult to photograph alone, and no easier while worn. Some things are simply better experienced in person.

Did I mention that the San Francisco Giants won the baseball World Series yesterday?

Lightweight Breanish herringbone tweed jacket, royal oxford cloth shirt, paisley pocket square and that muted cashmere and wool necktie.

The tie is so muted that it almost looks solid.

I like it since it does not upstage the herringbone coat.

By the way, who won last night?

I'm sure there are better videos and pictures out there, but the two links are from last night:

Apparently, Tim Lincecum learned how to tie a bowtie from YouTube videos.

Very smart indeed. My only hesitation in wearing this sort of stiped tie - at least here in the UK - is the resemblance to so many regimental, club and school ties. This example could, at first glance, pass for a Brigade of Guards tie. I appreciate the colours pictured aren't those of the BoG and, as Will says, perhaps the photo does not do the tie justice but over here stripes tend to indicate some affiliation. While the more garish breeds of cloth will go unremarked it is not uncommon for one to be asked if that is an 'Old Promethian' or 'Royal Simla Lancers' tie one is wearing. Not the end of the world but worth considering before knotting one on.

Excellent ensemble. The 'World Series' of what, exactly?

I read in an interview with Tim Lincecum that he shines his shoes before every game. Whether 'tis true or not, I am tickled at the thought.

W, you'll agree though that it's not just any sort of striped tie that has the military/club/school appearance in the UK?
Striped ties are available all over the place, but it's something about the combination of colours, the stripe combinations and the tie style and design that gives that impression. Also, traditionally, UK/European stripes slant in the opposite direction to US ties.

Not many school ties are silk (maybe some of the upper-crust schools) and hardly any wool. In any case I wear such ties now and again, in UK/Europe.

Nice outfit!

I do feel a need though, to make a remark on the post itself: I think there is quite a lot of people not in the least aware who won the Baseball "world" series. To be honest, I think the overwhelming majority on this planet has no idea. :)

If you're still looking for Lincecum pictures, there's decent one at:

Roger - As I said, the more garish stripes are unlikely to atttract comment as being obviusly fashion statements rather than tribal affiliations. Most public (ie private) schools here wear poplin, twill or barathea (I am in over my herad here trying to recall the different types of materials) ties, not silk (ex-old boys) and certainly not polyester, and the same is true for clubs and regiments (though polyester is available in the case of some regiments/corps). I agree though that the directional slant of the stripe is different on either side of the Atlantic. I think though that it will be the colour combination of the stripes, not their direction, that will catch all but the most discerning eye.

Meine Frau brauchte eine schmale Krawatte für das Firmenjubiläum. Sie hat sich hier auf Krawatten-Ties eine neue schmale Krawatte ausgesucht.
