The folks who developed the UBS dress code may not like the thought but socks should rarely be black. When a man needs to be discreet they should match his trousers, with just a bit of pattern to give them some interest.
When discretion is not called for, choose socks that pick up the color of some article of clothing worn above the waist, or that relate to nothing at all. Dark red, like the alternate socks shown in the illustrations, is always a reassonable choice to fall back on.

Would that we could easily get such socks!
About the only socks I've seen with decorations up the sides have been those with mini-argyles, which never run all the way down the ankle, and are more suited to casual wear anyway.
I did, however find a pair of socks with proper clocks running down them, much like those in the illustrations--at Target, of all places! Not the best quality, I'm afraid, but they look nice, considering the source.
P.S.: How about a post on building a sock wardrobe?
P.P.S.: Love the shoes in the illustrations, too.
Those kind of socks were made during the '60 using a spectacular English machine (Wildt was the name of the Company producing). Just few machines surviving today and very difficult to find spare parts. For 40 years, until beginning of 2000, nobody was able to reproduce the side design on a ribbed sock as those machines were able to do. A piece of history...
I love colorful socks so much! I like to match them to jewelry, ties, or pocket squares. Athletic uniform socks are a wonderful combination of brightly colored and comfortable. Finding them in thrift stores for super cheap is not an uncommon occurrence.
Vertical striped socks are frequently illustrated but actually relatively hard to find in sensible color combos. Btw love the first pic of the classic black captoe brogue. My favorite shoe.
Wonderful socks, Personally I would wear them with sock suspenders (garters) too for the proper look...
