The Wonderful Thing About Italy

The wonderful thing about Italy from the standpoint of the clothing obsessed is that it seems as though every small town has at least one artisanal endeavor making something beautiful and unique to wear. Yesterday a reader was kind enough to point out Calzaturificio Miserocchi, a small firm North of Milan that makes moccasins/car shoes for private clubs and small retailers. The pair in the photo were made for the late Gianni Agnelli.

Of course, only Agnelli might have thought to combine them with gray flannel. But that is part it as well.

There are two aspects tow Agnelli's foibles.
The first one was the obvious facile nonchalance of the mighty (think the buffoon who gave up a throne - much to our benefit).
The other, perhaps not as obvious, is related to Agnelli's flight from the Nazis with his siter Susanna when they were teenagers - he drove into a ditch and shattered his right leg, which obliged him to wear comfortable shoes all his life - as a matter of fact, you will never see him in normal shoes, of, for that matter, you almost never see full pictures of him standing.

BTW, Susanna - grande dame, proto-environmentalist much in a Gorean mold (as in 'the rich like their air clean'), ur-feminist and all-around bas bleu - has a great memoir dealing with growing up as an Agnelli. She was by far the most interesting of the siblings...
