Hanging Out Clothes

A tweed jacket, oxford cloth shirt, flannel trousers and a pair of (brown) slipons are most of the clothing a man needs for cool weather hanging out, on the set or on the weekend. Just add a bit of silk at the neck for lunch.

Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly flanking director Fred Zinneman. On the set of High Noon (1952)?

I love that Grace Kelly has offset the loose construction of her jacket (and the rest of her outfit) with a belt to define her waist.

Shabby chic? Is that the term?

Do you think Cooper's cuffs are hemmed (stitched) or rolled up?

Cooper was a famous clothes horse (so was Kelly of course) who looked good in anything which is why he always pops up in books about men's clothes. But clothes weren't a very important part of his stage persona as they were with someone like Fred Astaire, Ronald Coleman or Cary Grant. It's an interesting aspect of Cooper's stardom. When I was a kid I absolutely loved this movie and its theme music.

Thanks for publishing this photo which I have never seen.

Coop's elegance and nonchalence remind me of his role in "Love in the Afternoon" where he told Audrey Hepburn:

"I wish Cartier were open. I would buy you something lavish."
