A Heresy Compounded

Regular readers know that I like a shirt jacket instead of an odd jacket on weekend days when I will not be wearing a necktie. Unlike odd jackets, shirt jackets are not usually lined, and that means they do not wear quite warm enough for cool days, even the ones made from 14 ounce/400 gram tweed. Adding a scarf does not do the trick either, for the chill comes right through the jacketing when that is all there is to protect the wearer. The usual solution is a sweater of course, but, especially since some feel the shirt jacket is unorthodox to begin with, an odd vest may be a more original way to compound one's heresy.

In the photo, a waistcoat from W. Bill's 14 ounce/400 gram tattersall is worn with a royal oxford cloth shirt, gray flannel trousers and a Shetland shirt jacket. Below the waist, brown kiltied slipon shoes and argyle socks. A paisley neckerchief completes the day's clothing.

No heresy involved Will. This is what style is all about, marrying different garments, colors, textures is an aesthetically pleasing and utilitarian way. Just like Coco did when she got women wearing fishermen's shirts, or when the DoW teamed suede shoes with a striped suit. It looks great.

If it's a heresy, it's am awesome one. If I saw you on the street I'd probably offer to buy you cup of coffee just for the sartorial joy you brought me.

It might even be apostasy to an Englishman, but it loks good here in the US.

This is a great example of how 'heresy' sometimes produces the best results.

I have read and enjoyed hundreds of your posts Will and I virtually always agree with you. I am extending that agreement by this most current post and would like to add that, yes it certainly is a heresy. I am going to chalk it up to residual italian jet lag. Alternately, it might be filed under the heading of "if you want to make an omelet you have to break a few eggs".

Will, my admiration for you and ASW are undiminished, but you have gone too far.

Dear goodness, Will, a tattersall vest with that outfit is verging on late-period Flusserism... May I instead suggest a nice vicuna cardie? There's a Sulka one on the ebay right now...

I noticed that the bottom waistcoat button and buttonhole mimic an undone button, but they're affixed to the point separation.
It makes the waistcoat look starched and stiff. I feel a waistcoat should hug the body more than this.
