Out Come the Overshoes

I am leaving for Italy at the end of the week, and, given the abominable weather in Europe recently, clothing for the depths of winter has been top of mind. Out from the back of a closet are my one pair of rubber overshoes, and with them the thought that I had forgotten to get the pair of Swims that I promised myself the last time I was snowbound.

Swims you see are to the best of my knowledge the only rubber overshoe that comes in colors other than black, including burgundy, brown, dark green and the orange in the photo among others. Not that I have any desire for orange overshoes mind you but I find black particularly unappealing when it is dirty and overshoes are always playing around in the mud and slush.

$100 (£65) a pair or a bit more depending on the retailer. Green ones for me, I think.

When are boots preferred to rubber over-shoes? Is the determining factor(s) the severity of weather (anticipated or actual) the event & other elements of attire (say business or casual), City or Suburb... I'm not discouraging the use of said "swims" but before putting $100 into something, I'd like to know how likely I am to use them (once in a lifetime... I'll have the better wine...). Thanks much. As far as I know, Galoshes is only needed if you live up here in the north. During our winters, they put salt on the roads to lower the freezing point on the snow so it melts away even beow freezing. Of what I hear, that's not the case in Italy. Please don't use galoshes. Its ugly and its not necessary. Good leather shoes can handle water. Galoshes are made to protect them from salt, not water!

Will, I bought a pair in green this fall. They are great for the DC commute. The inside has a soft material that almost buffs your shoe as you walk. Easy to put on and remove, and they have a nice storage bag so you can throw them in your briefcase without getting everything wet. They even have a good enough tread for snow. I've been very happy with them and I am considering another pair to leave at the office just in case.

GP, overshoes are useful until the snow or water is more than a couple of inches deep. That's when a pair of galoshes is necessary.

For true cold weather travel to and from the office, I much prefer a Dainite or lugged sole dress boot. If it gets really bad, then out come the Sorel snow boots and style be damned until I'm inside the office.

I will say Swims have a more substantial feel compared to other slip-on overshoes, and the choice of colors is kind of fun, in the face of otherwise ubiquitous black.

What is the rationale for accommodating colored overshoes, but only black umbrellas? Hmmm...

Are we not all entitled to some inconsistency?

Sure -- as long as you don't look askance when my umbrella matches my socks (which would NEVER be black).

I have a pair of the Swims "mobster" galoshes, which are nice, if pricey (once you factor in shipping).

I haven't been able to get a pair of their over-shoes yet in a colour that I could stand. I mean, really, orange?
