Not Dull Enough

I wear turnback shirt cuffs in the city every day I am there and have been looking off and on for several years for an acceptable-to-me pair of dark red cufflinks. Enamel on gold would be perfect and of course I have yet to see a pair. I did come across the pictured pair of Trianon links a while back but have been unable to pull the trigger, so to speak. The darned things just look too much like gemstones.

Now a gentleman can wear whatever cufflinks and shirt studs he likes for evening. Diamonds, rubies, emeralds and their ilk are fine and dandy, to the limit of his pocketbook and even a little beyond. But, during the day, the flashy stuff is just too, well, flashy. Dull stones are to be preferred. Or plain gold, like the classic Tiffany knots that we should all have purchased when gold was $35 an ounce. But gold is obviously not dark red.

At any rate, I keep coming back to these garnet links that have been sitting on a jeweler's shelf for some time now. But I will let them continue to sit there. They are just not dull enough somehow.

Have a look at the red carnelian links at Orlap: I love their craftmanship, and their links are unusual and beautifully engineered:

(I have no connection with this business beyond that of a satisfied customer.)

They look good to me.

Deakin and Francis make a lovely cornelian and rose gold set - not double sided however:

You did say enamel...but cornelian/carnelian and bloodstone might work too.

As he does fairly often, NJS displays the most expensive taste of the respondents thus far. And the race is not even close.

Will, in lieu of true gemstones, I have a pair of amber/gold links for everyday wear. Amber is warm to the touch, not a true gem, and in my opinion acceptable without being too flashy or evening-oriented. Plus, they would closely match your desired colors.

To steal FE Smith's description of Winston Churchill and add a little to it: it takes at least half a century to learn to make do with the best of everything:))

I really do love the links in the above photo. Though depending on how much you are willing to spend, I am sure that you could have them commissioned by a jeweler. While many Jewelry stores are little more than retail outlets, a few, especially in a large city, old fashioned artisans remain.

Upcoming royal wedding instructions to guests about how to dress have some wondering what is a ' Lounge Suit ' . Is this something that Elton John would wear on a night out ?

Very funny Rob. A lounge suit is the now-rather dated term for an ordinary suit. It dates from the start of the 20th century, when men wore them as a casual alternative to a frock coat or morning dress.

Hey, those are flashy but I would wear them to school and the kids would ask all kinds of questions about them like they do about every pair of cuff links I wear. I won't spend 'real' money on them so I only buy cuff links at yard sales and flea markets and very often pick up real 'finds'. A great old Mexican craftsman named Hector Aguilar made wonderful cuff links...sterling set with amethysts, coral or turquoise. Anyway, the kids love to hear the story behind the 'links'. What they cost, where I found them and what they're worth. Clothing can be a 'lesson plan' that might get them out of sneakers and too short pants.
