Suits and Socks, Installment XXI
One of my current projects is to add heavy odd trousers to my wardrobe so that I am consistently able to wear trousers that are heavier in weight than the odd jacket chosen for that occasion. A man can wear heavier cloth on his legs than he can his upper body without over-heating and the heavier stuff of course drapes better which is the objective.
On the day of the photo, I was test driving a pair of light gray 17 ounce/500 gram flannels made by Salvatore Ambrosi. They are paired with light gray Bresciani socks with navy pin stripes and a pair of SW1 monks in dark brown textured calf. Above the waist, a blue serge odd jacket worn with a light gray on white striped shirt, navy cashmere necktie striped with white and a white linen handkerchief with a lilac border.

Heavy flannel drapes very well as do all heavier cloths, so you couldn't be more right Will. When I look at pictures from the first half of the 20th century I'm always asking myself why don't my pants drape like Lloyd George's or Jean Patou's. Good drapers is a bit hit and miss. I have a few light worsteds, wool/cotton gaberdines and even a cotton/silk mix that are good but most lighter weights including flannels are fairly bad, particularly when static enters the picture, so one certainly needs to keep this in mind when making purchases.
At the risk of sounding like a Sartorialist commenter...that just looks bloody fantastic.
Will, I don't mean to be rude, but will you please post a second photo along with these sock installments?
I mean to say that it sounds a whole damn more interesting the complete garb than the socks for pete's sake!
Just a thought, of course...
Sublime . . .
Will,
This post makes me internalize the need for more socks.
Just fantastic.
