The Tan Summer Suit

Bryan Ferry was in New Delhi the other day for the Cartier 'Travel With Style' Concours at The New Delhi Jaipur Polo Club and though we can castigate him for the empty breast pocket on his jacket, his light blue shirt, midnight blue and white knit tie and lightweight brown glen checked suit are an ever so slightly different take on one of the classic combinations for 80 degree (27C) weather.

In gabardine, cotton, or linen, every man's closet is better off when it contains a tan suit. Wear it for holiday or travel with a less formal shirt (chambray, a linen solid or even a plaid) and a black or dark blue silk knit necktie, or dress it up for the office with an end on end or voile shirt and foulard tie. Only please stick a white linen handkerchief into your jacket's breast pocket.

Forgive my naivete does one refer to Mr Ferry's suit as a Glen Check or Prince of Wales?

The Prince of Wales check is a particular version of the glen check. Ferry's suit is a glen check.

That tie sure looks gray/natural to me, which I would take to be a good choice with that glen which might even have a gray over line that's hard to see in the photo.

Lovely cloth. A nice alternative to solid cotton or linen suits. I like BF's choice of arm accessory, too.

I love his suit. I have a brown Glen check suit or two. I also have one beige cotton & one beige wool suits.
I somehow struggle to call Mr Ferry's suit "tan"... I think it is dark enough to be worn in half season or even in the winter!

"... every man's closet is better off when it contains a tan suit."

While I think this is excellent advice for many men, there are also those of us whom tan does not flatter. What color(s) would you suggest for us?

I suggest tan, and what I mean by that is that the shirt and necktie has much more to do with whether a man's face is washed out by his clothes than does his jacket.

Not only shirt and necktie count more than suit to wash out a man's face, but arm candy can certainly enhance or detract....

...especially if you mixing patterns.

Having thought about it, I have come to the conclusion that men who are not flattered by tan may well resort to oyster or taupe as an alternative to the tan suit. Oyster and taupe are light, neutral colors, like tan, but have a cool gray tone, making these colors flattering (to some of us, anyway) in a way that tan is not.

I have seen poplin suits in oyster, as well as chinos in the same shade, but nothing in a pattern like Mr. Ferry's spiffy duds.

P.S.: This barely-there color also goes by the mysterious name of "stone."

I have seen a beautiful pair of Donald Pilner dress shoes in light to medium gray. What does one wear gray shoes with? My default daytime dress is a black blazer with medium gray slacks, gray socks, and black shoes.
