There is Nothing New, Really

Proving once again that there is nothing really new under the sun, Woody Hochswender noted in GOLF Magazine yesterday that Martin Kaymer was wearing a mysterious bit of neckwear at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship this past Saturday.  Hochswender of course is the former style reporter for the New York Times and Senior Editor of Esquire Magazine whose two books on men's style include Men in Style (Rizzoli, 1993), which is on my Twenty Great Clothing Books list. And his eye was good in this case, capturing as it did a look similar to the one Cary Grant wore in To Catch a Thief more than fifty years ago.

The details of Kaymer's scarf are relatively mundane. A $23 piece known as a Black Fly Buff that was designed by a Florida Keys fishing guide, the Buff is made of Coolmax Extreme, a technical fabric designed to screen UV and wick moisture. I might prefer something in silk but Coolmax is probably a better choice for the golf course.  And I hope we see more of them.

Thanks to reader J for the tip.

According to the commentators on the Golf Channel, Kaymer did not have any mocks in his wardrobe for the tournament and bought this buff from someone selling them at the club. The temperature this past weekend was quite chilly in the early morning and with the wind kept it in the low sixties at best all day. This may have been a better choice than putting on a full undergarment.

Hello Will

Long time reader first time poster.

The Buff shown is worn in its simplest guise. For a seamless tubular piece of material it is a very versatile item. In the context of your blog this is the only way it is ever likely to be worn though.

More info on the product here.

Nothing new indeed. But to see Grant compared to ...well, let's say advertising pillar... hurts.

Herr Kreisler, I belive I was comparing the advertising pillar to Grant rather than the other way around. That is a compliment to Grant rather than the reverse.

OK but does anybody do this? You go into your collection of handkerchiefs and pick out a large one (usually a blue or red western style). Now you are wearing a tee shirt, pocket type, and whatever else, shorts, jeans etc. and you tie the thing like a necktie and snug it up. my wife watched me dress for the 'Wild Hog Fest' last weekend in the Everglades this way and just smiled. Oh yeah, and Grant was driving a Jag 120 (I think)to the picnic with the rich chic..
