When to Wear Shorts

Young boys wore short pants once upon a time, and their transition to trousers was a coming of age that left little inclination to ever go back. Those memories are gone now of course, and we see shorts-wearing men in the oddest of places.

Shorts have their place in hot weather and that place is around the house and on the beach - essentially the same places that a man can properly wear espadrilles.  Hiking and other athletic pursuits are also appropriate venues, with golf being neither fish nor fowl (there are still courses where men dress well to play, and shorts are less appropriate there). The well dressed man is trousered otherwise.  'Nuff said.

If you ask me, that photo shows how to wear shorts, too!

perhaps it is just me, but I feel very uncomfortable in shorts. One then must worry even more so about their sock height, which is more difficult to control, as one can not wear sock garters with shorts.

Unfortunately Will, we are a large minority. Shorts have taken over as riguer at most events in the summer months. Cost of linen and fine cotton has prevented alot of people from wearing the appropriate garments. I agree with you 100%.

Having lived in Bermuda for more than nine years, I am very (perhaps too) comfortable wearing shorts when the mercury climbs above 80 degrees. By shorts, I mean tailored short trousers. Made from appropriate cloth, properly fitted and finished with a 3 inch hem. No cuffs. No cargo pockets.

Yeah, yeah... Easy to say for a guy who lives in San Francisco. In Washington, DC, no sane person wears trousers in July unless he is forced to. Well-bred men used to wear dinner jackets every Saturday night also. Times change.

Some would ask whether sane people are in Washington D.C. in July but I merely wonder whether our nation's servants are wearing shorts to the office.

There are even fewer well-dressed men than sane men in Washington DC at any time of the year, Will.

Although I would like to agree, as a college student I think well tailored shorts are very comfortable for campus.

I have found khaki and seersucker shorts to be invaluable during the summer months in Los Angeles. Another good example is the Ivy League students shown in "Take Ivy". They pull off shorts appropriately.

Just my two cents :)

Tailored shorts look even more comical and inappropriate than very basic cotton shorts. Even the slightest whiff of a sunbeam and the short wearers waltz about in cargo shorts. Often it has less to do with necessity and more to do with deranged fashions. Cotton is not expensive and linen is not the price of spun gold either.

I agree with Will, and I live in GA. It's not hard to put on a pair of khakis or seersucker or linen pants when leaving the house. Upon returning, throw the shorts back on. The object here is the increasing lack of decorum. I teach at a small college, and I was amazed at seeing only two sport coats at the recent graduation. Baseball caps, however, were numerous on the guests.
