Late Summer is Upon Us
Late Summer is upon us, that time of year when it is difficult to so much as think about clothes unless it is to calculate how little we can get away with wearing. My body of course is long past its sell by date and keeping as much of it covered as possible is a service to the rest of mankind, which is one of the reasons why I wear a jacket so long as the water outside is not threatening to boil.
Linen safari jacket worn on the weekend with a voile shirt, cotton Simonnot-Godard neckerchief, gabardine trousers and a pair of Sloop slip-ons. The safari seems to me a little better suited to a neckerchief than a conventional odd jacket, and a neckerchief better in the heat than a regular necktie, particularly when one is not headed anywhere particularly formal.

Splendid! We're not having much in the way of a heat wave (yet!) down in the southern part of the state so I can't really relate to today's blog from a climatic standpoint but . . . I love safari jackets! And I'm tickled to find you in one, speaking as another who favors humanity by staying covered up. Maybe when the Santa Ana's start to blow . . .
Will,
Your relatively recent offering of belts at your store led to a question I have been meaning to ask: do you use belts to hold up your trousers when you are not wearing a suit/sport coat with tie (as in this picture)?
I ask for two reasons: (1) the way the trouser bottoms are "bunched" around your ankles suggest to me they are not being suspended by braces, and (2) if you DO wear braces - no matter whether you wear a tie or not with an odd jacket/suit - do you EVER remove your outer-most clothing while out and about (which would be the safari jacket in the photo)?
Thanks, as always, for your continued good advice.
Sam
Very nice - that outfit seems to need a hat to be complete, though.
When I am wearing braces, which I am not in the photo (those trousers have side tabs) I do not remove my jacket. Conversely, if I may be removing my jacket I do not wear braces.
Ah linen, gabardine, and voile. Splendid. Those gabardine trousers look silky smooth. From whence do you source your gab?
I like Scabal's 13 ounce Royal Gabardines the best.
When not wearing trousers, do you use belts, tab adjusters, or a beltless bespoke waistband? As one who wears their trousers high, pleated and cuffed,I find braces far more comfortable than belts, and so wear them with suits and odd jackets. Do you wear them only with suits? Just curious.
I generally only wear braces with suits though I will sneak them in if I have a waistcoat under my jacket.
The rest of the time it is side adjusters. I have some odd trousers with plain waistbands but they were accidents.
John, I have no problem with criticism except when it is coming from someone using an anonymous profile.
