Simpler Time

Quite a few men collect wristwatches but I am not one of them. Indeed, I have but two reasonably modest watches by the standards of those same men. That has not kept me from day dreaming about another from time to time over the years, principally when I was far from home and trying to calculate whether or not my wife would be awake. Or wondering what a colleague was or was not thinking when he called me in the middle of the night.

Of course I was thinking about dual time zone watches in those days - the Jaeger LeCoultre Master Hometime in stainless steel was a particular favorite - but no longer. iPhone and iPad presets tell me the time in a dozen cities around the world today, relegating my watch to a piece of jewelry that gives me the time without the bother of pulling a phone out of an inside pocket. And so now my only requirement for a watch is that it keeps reasonable time for a day and looks good on the wrist, like the twenty year old Jaeger LeCoultre Gentilhomme in the photo.

If these are not simpler times, surely keeping time is simpler than it was.

Given your penchant for texture and grenadine in particular, I would suggest an engine turned guilloche dial. Perhaps a Breguet, or if you're looking for something bespoke, something from Rolland G Murphy, watchmaker from Lancaster, PA, RGMWatches.com.

I've been using an old USSR-made Sekonda timepiece for almost 25 years. A simple, somewhat elegant watch that has only been for repair once (new strap twice) and keeps excellent time.
I use the phone as an alarm clock, but I like my watch, it just tells me the time and doesn't bother with anything else.

Would you not have to have four watches? For the combinations of black/brown leather and gold/silver metal?

Roman, I wear gold with a black alligator strap for evening and stainless trimmed with gold during the day. Metal need only match metal, so that latter watch is fine with essentially any cufflinks I might wear.

I am a watch lover, but my favorite watches are those with sentimental value: My grandfather's gold and stainless rolex, or my great grandfather's Mid century Elgin Schockmaster. I generally used the former, as the latter, while beautiful, is comparatively fragile and I do not want to break it. Plus, the Rolex keeps perfect time and has a date function, which I always forget. I could have sworn, Will, that in one of your youtube videos, your were wearing a Cartier Tank. What ever it was, it was a very beautiful watch.

Will,

Your response to Roman prompts a question I've had for you for some time.

I wear a white-gold wedding band. Should I restrict myself to silver and white-gold accessories (particularly cuff-links, watches, and belt buckles) or is there room for gold once in while?

Elliott, watch, belt buckle and links should not conflict but don't have to be the same (enameled links for example with a gold belt buckle are fine). Personally, I don't feel restricted by my wedding ring. I wear platinum cufflinks and a yellow gold wedding ring frequently.

My favorite men's watch is definitely IWC watches. They are classic yet modern and are perfect for any adventurer!
