Properly Unbuttoned

It is always with mixed feelings that I begin to contemplate autumn. On the one hand, there is the thought of renewing acquaintance with that closet full of friends that were put away in the spring. On the other, there is the less pleasant prospect of the weather turning dismal. Still, a man must be realistic - it will be tweed weather in Stockholm next month.

When it is tweed weather, of course, it is also time to take out that overlooked fall essential, the knit waistcoat. Luciano Barbera shows us how to wear one under a lovat odd jacket, properly partially buttoned in a bit of harmless sprezzatura. The waistcoat adds a bit of additional color and texture to his ensemble, particularly since it complements without matching anything else the master is wearing.

As to the buttons, one of them buttoned is plenty but if you cannot tolerate the feeling of dishevelment do at least leave the bottom one open.

And what he says in this photo is:
Your manhood will shrink to this size if you don´t wear a tie!!!

Sorry couldn´t help it :o)

Will, my friend, you live in the Bay Area, where Autumn is the best of of the year... you protest too much :-)

As for Barbera's waistcoat, I am never that 'sprezzato', but it is true that undoing the two topmost buttons generates a more graceful angle that better suits that of the lapels on the coat on a 3/2. Also, it shows more of the necktie.

I like the look as well. The waistcoat or as some might call it a sweater vest is a very nice comfy look in fall. I still don't get nor like the idea of wearing a watch on the cuff of my shirt. If in fact he is wearing a MTM or bespoke shirt, which I think he is,=) he certainly should have the sleeve measured to fit a watch underneath it comfortably. I do!

Consistent with his sprezz, he's saying "I care, but only this much." Will, you read my mind. I was just thinking of a couple more sleeveless cardigans or whatever. I only have one in flannel gray.

Barbera is my style icon (possibly because we belong in one of those separated at birth photo pairings). And yep I always wear my knitted vest or cardigan with the two top buttons undone. No wristwatch over the shirt cuff however. A bit too derivative.
