I am convinced that all Italian style icons wear knit ties in warm weather. And in the photo, Beppe Modenese, founder of Milan Fashion Week, reinforces the stereotype.
The photo is also of interest as it may document the only time Mr. Modenese has been photographed wearing something other than a navy blue striped suit.

I'm just starting to get into knit ties... Are they considered seasonal?
They add texture to the smooth materials used in summer.
Blue and brown. Perfection.
I wear them all year. However, in the summer I mostly wear knit silk ties, which are lighter, and in the winter I'll wear knit wool/mohair ties.
This is certainly not a "rule" - just my style.
And he looks like he is not happy with his non-navy blue striped circumstances.
Nor is he happy that his pants are pulling at the closure. Maybe a bit too much pasta. This must be an old suit. It certainly doesn't look that good on him. I would toss it after that wearing.
I went seriously "knit" about five years ago. Until then my only knit tie was black but now I've got about 12 silk or wool ones. I love the scrunch of the silk ones and the undoubted winner of purveyors imho is Paul Stuart although I'm told they are all made by about three manufacturers in Italy. Different specs I suppose.

Was it the Duke of Devonshire who used to get his gardener to wear his suits a few times before he donned them.
