Cream Jackets for Summer

Perhaps the most seasonally appropriate of warm weather jackets is a solid or semi-solid with a cream ground. The reason for that is simple - cream complements a sun tan, like the one that perpetually graces the face of Mr. George Hamilton in the photo.

Cream is the exception to the general rule that odd jacket ensembles should have contrast. HRH Prince Charles for example usually combines his cream linen double breasted with khaki cotton trousers during the day. Add a white shirt and some tan or white shoes and it all works together. Other colors have their place on holiday or the weekend, especially below the waist summer classics like Breton red and madras trousers.

After six o'clock, contrast comes into its own. Worn with lightweight trousers in charcoal gray, a cream single breasted jacket, white shirt and a bow tie are all but semi-formal.

Key to choosing the cream jacket is to be certain that it is visibly not white. White cotton in particular is a bit too similar to the coats worn by service people on duty, and though honorable duty that is probably not a desirable image on social occasions.  Ecru, ivory or eggshell though, in linen, gabardine, or silk, will be just the thing.

Would you also say that the jacket would be better with rounded or sharp-cornered fronts at the bottom? I mean if it's being paired with darker trousers in the evening?

Will, I need one of these. Mr. Hamilton's looks like it might be gabardine?

I think about this very subject as I sit here late Summer in my Whipcord and White Bucks. Would a creme color jacket go for longer in the season? I believe that even here in the South, the white and light colors must be put away at the very least within the next few weeks. Though Mr. Hamilton makes a great style icon, even he would need to go to darker Fall colors soon. What are our options?

For some reason I am minded to be bound by the switch of the clock. Light colors begin with the onset of Daily Savings and Fall colors with the onset of Standard Time. Here on the Left Coast, temperature is less a factor than light.

Im interested in a cream jacket but would like one in the (I think ) heavy silk material the character Jack Vincennes had in LA Confidential, can will tell me what that material is. And where to buy the material, I think it was a 40's classic for the cream or Ivory jacket, thanks guys.

I love George Hamilton, great looking geezer and seemingly in the right track with the broads, never gets too involved, thats the way!!!!!!

Am I the only one who thinks that Mr. Hamilton's dress looks unfinished because he lacks a necktie?

No, you definitely are not.

One of the few well-dressed, nay well-draped, actors remaining in Hollywood, an underrated talent and a charming throwback to the old school. Highly recommend Zorro the Gay Blade to anyone who has not seen it.

Yes, he really should be wearing a necktie with that shirt. You can see how that well-made collar is just screaming for a tie.
