Rushed

Some days are just rushed, and so it was when this photograph was taken. I was running late for a rare one on one dinner with my wife in between travels and house guests. The jacket is a 12 ounce/360 gram Finmeresco blazer with horn buttons that need to be changed for a lighter color. It is worn with damp hair, a pair of my Sloop slip-on shoes, stone trousers, a tan on white striped shirt, a wool and silk pocket square and a bow tie that needs fiddling with.

The trouble with the dark horn is that even with patch pockets the jacket has a bit of an orphaned suit coat look to it. Lighter colored buttons would ameliorate that, which calls for a visit to Tender Buttons when I am in New York next week. Buttoning the coat to the lower button might have helped as well, but I was too rushed.

On the other hand, dinner at Range, a one Michelin star establishment in the Mission District, was excellent.

Well done. I'm sure you'll be forgiven.

Will, go for metal buttons.

If you want a change from the gold or brass button, try pewter.

That's far better than I have ever been able to look! But thank-you so much for the reference to Range. One could almost be convinced to make the flight to SF for that reason, alone.

Will,

How do you feel about "alternative" metals for jacket buttons, like pewter or copper?

Horatio, the principal thing to pay attention to is whether the metal will tarnish. If you won't have to polish it there is no reason not to use it, provided you like the look and can find a buttons made from it in the first place.

While not pertinent to the question of the jacket or it's buttons, I am of the opinion that a bowtie should be worn in a state of "needs fiddling with," as it indicates that your affairs are more important than a perfect knot, and more importantly, that you tied it by hand. I have recently extended this theory to my neckties as well.

Thank you for the thoughts, Will. I am contemplating copper buttons for one of my blazers, but may go for antiqued silver.

Decisions, decisions....

I went to tender buttons yesterday after one of the buttons on my blazer disappeared. It was a gret find, and I found a beautiful set of gold buttons. thank yoou will for introducing me to it on this blog.

Thank you that pointer to Tender Buttons. I've found elgant classic blazer buttons at Benson & Clegg. But when I want something unique, I go to Etsy and have wonderful buttons custom designed and made by artisans for specific combinations of jacket, trousers, and accessories.
