The Gray Odd Jacket
City dwellers need gray odd jackets to complement their navy blazers fall through spring. Gray, or black and white that appears gray at a distance, looks better than brown in the evening, making it a more useful choice. Gray herringbone from the Isles of Harris, Lewis, Uist and Barra in the Outer Hebrides is the classic cloth for cold weather, and something in a 10-12 ounce (300-360 gram) cashmere or lambswool complements it for spring and fall. Either of them are worn effectively with flannel trousers, oxford cloth shirts in the traditional panoply of colors and silk paisley pocket squares.
By the way, this pairing of gray jackets with navy blazers fails in summer. Gray is not the best color for sunshine, and light blue works better.

Excellent advice, thank you.
Great advice indeed. What are the opinions on a gray pick and pick with black buttons for an odd jacket? Could it work?
"Gray is not the best color for sunshine"
Funny how the June 9th, 2010: "Don't Forget About Gray" is the first suggested older post to turn up in the "You might also like" section.
Will,
Thanks so much for this valuable observation: I've long known intuitively that gray works well for fall/winter odd jackets, while light blue is much better for spring/summer -- but I could never put my finger on why.
And congrats on the beautiful new jacket. I hope it's finished soon enough for you to wear this winter.
Nice alternative to a Birdseye. Looks like a Thomas Mahon jacket.
"Don't Forget About Gray" is so 2010. I spent much of that year looking for a pearl gray gabardine and when I finally found a piece decided it didn't look good in the light.
Cary Grant wore a smashing light grey (almost silver) odd jacket during the summer in Washington, DC in "Houseboat." He paired it with white trousers. Hence, I am forced to disagree.
Correction - paired with dark grey trousers. Don't know what I was thinking.
