Waiting at the Side of the Road

There is a twenty mile (32 kilometer) stretch of highway between my house and the main highway to San Francisco that is inhabited principally by livestock, so naturally that is where I had my first tire failure of the twenty-first century the other day. Thankfully, said failure occurred by one of AT&T's rare cell towers in that area, so the inconvenience was limited to an hour with nothing to do but read and take photographs.

Navy flannel suit with pearl chalkstripes, a blue on white windowpane check shirt, navy cashmere necktie, paisley silk pocket square, silver hose and black cap toe oxfords. Perfect clothing for waiting until someone else can change the tire.

Surely you can change a tire yourself, Will!

Is that a BMW?

Will -
What leg opening size do you generally favor on your trousers? It seems that like me you tend towards wider openings than what is mostly available in good RTW offerings today (difficult to find over 17"). Or are my eyes deceiving me? I have size 11.5 feet and these narrow openings can make my feet look ridiculous.

Oh, come on Richard! Change a tire and get that outfit messed up? I think not.

It takes , what, twenty minutes to change a tire. Add five minutes to remove your coat and tie roll up your sleeves and you still you would have been on your way in 25 minutes.

Even if I wanted to get dirty, driving on a flat spare is not a significant improvement.

I never seem to be dressed so well whenever I've had unexpected car trouble.

This brings to mind a concern: When driving, do you remove your jacket to avoid excessive wrinkling on the back and at the vents?

Let's talk about cars. I'm all for vintage vehicles - well, not vintage per se, but older, classic rides with some panache. I generally find them more interesting than something off the lot.

I currently drive an e24 BMW, but have also driven a '74 MGB and '66 T-Bird. All of these cars cost significantly less than a new model, although naturally the upkeep is more expensive.

I'm curious to see a post on cars on ASW.

Hi Will,

I race cars (as a hobby) and you can get pretty dirty even when being careful. I say good choice to just sit and read until a proper tire can be placed on the car. Of course all of my cars have proper spare tires. :-)

By the way is that Mercedes CLK?

Cheers,

CFC

Very good eye CFC.

No Levi, I don't remove my jacket. A little steam takes care of any wrinkles accumlated during the day.
