Dressing The Overcoat Pocket
There is considerable controversy over the issue of the pocket square and the overcoat pocket, and I come down firmly on the side of yes. In other words, where there is a pocket, there should be a discreet inch of silk or linen showing in my opinion. There are, however, a couple of considerations.
For one thing, consider whether you will be wearing a scarf and, if so, make it a plain one so as not to over-complicate your look. A solid color cashmere muffler will, for example, look better than anything patterned.
Without a scarf, the guidelines for choosing a square to complement a jacket apply to the overcoat pocket. Pair a matte square with a necktie that has sheen, or a shiny square with a matte tie. Mix up the colors. And never, ever, choose a square with the same pattern and color scheme as your necktie.
But do dress your coat pocket.

Will, I own six overcoats made by the venerable british brand Crombie, two d.b. and four s.b.
Three of them have breast pocket (one d.b. and two s.b.)and the other three do not.
I thought the ones without breast pocket were dressier(as it happens when we are talking about shirts)but now I´m not so sure.
What do you think?
I see you are wearing a nice covert coat in this photo.
I have just taken this morning one of my coverts to an alteration taylor, because I find it too baggy. I prefer a more fitted look (I have read this kind of coat can be worn without a jacket underneath).
But, at the same time, I don´t want too much waist supression. I find that a "sandglass" look is too feminine for my taste.
Do you think I am rigth?
I'm certanly with you on this! Having recently purchased another D.B. over coat from Savile Row for this winter, an hour after I left the store I couldn't help but to pop a silk 'chief in as soon as possible.
I side with you, sir.
if wearing navy wear a white or red hanky. a scarf should be worn as decoration not as against the cold if wearing a crombie or covert
Fran, I have never thought about coat pockets as affecting formality. On my coats, perhaps coincidentally, the lighter weights have pockets and the heavier do not. I always assumed that was bevause the lighter coats were likely to be worn without scarves, and so needed something to perk up the chest. But I have never taken the time to see how many exceptions to that idea may exist.
