If a navy blue suit and a navy satin necktie are the lounge suit's version of formality for the evening, and I for one think they are, then the dark gray suit and black satin necktie are the equivalent for day wear.
Formal day wear of course combines a black jacket with patterned gray trousers but few men own that any longer. Still, serious occasions do arise from time to time and require something to wear. Here is where the justly-maligned-for-evening black satin four in hand finds its place with a gray suit, black shoes, a white pocket handkerchief and a white shirt. Continue to wear your matte grenadine to funerals but wear black satin to sit for your portrait.

Hi Will,
I attempted to post a question just a few minutes ago, but the system did not bring me to a "confirm/sign in" page.
I am about to sit for a new "formal" picture for my lawfirm. You have seen my previous picture (it is on FB) and I had the dreaded TV fold with a cream satin tie and dark gray suit. I was not following you at that time, so I plead mea culpa :)
Do you suggest the Kennedy ensemble - gray suit, navy satin tie, white shirt, and white pocket square (I prefer a one-tip triangle angled slightly toward the shoulder and away from the middle)?
As far as suit, I have a dark gray (darker than Kennedy's), a gray almost identical to Grant's in the movie North by Northwest, and a mid-gray where the navy tie really pops out. I find that the darker the suit, the less "pop" the navy tie has, but then, that may be the point - not to call too much attention to any one thing in a "formal" portrait appearing on a professional website involving the legal profession.
I look forward to any advice. And thanks for the continued good advice and products you provide on your site.
Regards,
Sam
Wear the darker suit with midnight blue.
