Trangressions At A Gala

The Met's Costume Institute Gala the other day brought out the usual mass of those whose business it is to be in the public eye. And though it is so easy to be critical, how else are we to learn?

We find most of the more common sartorial transgressions on an otherwise very good looking Mr. Matt Bomer. From the bottom up:

- open laced bluchers are inappropriately informal
- too much trouser break; an inch is about the maximum
- overly tight jacket is pulling
- lounge suit pocket flaps; at a minimum the flaps should be tucked into his pockets
- jacket collar off the back of the neck

These, the uncovered waistband and overly long jacket sleeves are unfortunately the most common errors made these days by men who appear to actually be trying. So many are not. And give credit to the ample display of shirt cuff, properly disarrayed pocket square and nicely tied bow.

Many women attendees on the other hand looked wonderful, Diane Kruger for one. This being a menswear publication however, I leave you to click through for yourselves.

Very typical of this kind of event! Most of them look uncomfortable; whereas girls still seem to be brought up to look forward to wearing a nice frock.

I'll agree with all of these transgressions, especially the horrible pooling trousers, but not the jacket collar. It's something that happens to nearly everyone not set up for a portrait.

Incidentally there's a portrait picture of Patrick Grant floating around the web (http://www.male-mode.com/2009/12/male-muse-patrick-grant.html), with his collar off the back of his neck and this is man wearing top class bespoke suits. A shifting collar is just a fact of life.

Sorry, Will, but for once I have to disagree with you. I do agree with the points you made, but compared to the average celebrity in semi-formal wear, this gentleman has done much better.

He has a bow tie instead of a four-in-hand, and it appears to be one that he tied himself. He has a pocket square and shows shirt cuff nicely. He's wearing only black and white. His jacket has peak lapels and cloth-covered buttons. His trousers have a silk stripe down the side. He's done a lot right.

Overall grade A- or a B+ if you want to be tough.

Good points, although with the way the world is today I still think he qualifies as better than average.

Also, should I ever publish a volume of verse, I think I shall have to steal the title "Transgressions at a Gala"--it has a nice ring to it :)

Agree with everything you said, except...You say "ample display of shirt cuff;" it looks like it's over 1" showing--a bit too much for my taste.

After reviewing the photos, I think this article should have been titled: "A Gala of Transgressions".

A recent picture of Prince William had him in a DJ which had flaps and vents. His Papa knows better; why doesn't he tell him?
