Manolo Costa
Twenty floors above Madison Avenue in New York is the terraced studio of Manolo Costa, where he offers personalized service and hand tailored, soft shouldered clothing made to his specification.
Costa, who learned his trade at Paul Stuart and the Polo Mansion on Madison Avenue before opening on his own last March, is a man of refined taste, emphasizing texture over color and cut over pattern. That taste, which to my eye is among the very best in New York, is the reason to visit.
By appointment.

How refreshing to see all the buttons buttoned on someone's surgeon's cuffs!
But is true bespoke?
But what a refreshing palette!
The collar on the mannequin looks too small to me
Several comments:
1. Disclaimer: I am not a bespoke client. The only two true bespoke projects I commissioned were in Spain and South America decades ago and resulted in poor outcomes.
2. Experience at Paul Staurt and the Polo Shop hardly recommend one for bespoke. He might have developed good taste but can hardly claim to do or
even manage a bespoke operation.
The copy in the WebSite is larded with cliche's
and buzzwords. It's like a PR puff-piece . He's clearly going for the uninformed rich younger market. Things have changed. When I was 25 and could only dream about bespoke, I knew about Chipp(custom) and others including Huntsman. This guy is selling an image to the ignorant but aware.
I think you just called me ignorant and uninformed.
One of us has been buying bespoke from multiple tailors for decades. One of us has seen some of the work. Both are entitled to opinions but perhaps one of us is significantly better informed than the other.
Touche'.
Will, you obviously take your vetting
responsibilities seriously. I guess I was
turned off by the promotional image he projects.
It's good to hear that a "local" has set up a bespoke operation in New York. On the basis of you opinion,
I hope that he prospers.
His images are nice. The taste level is high; everything is very nicely coordinated. Good taste is always in short supply. The coat and trouser models are fashionably short and somewhat tight, which is not the house style of this blog. Will has a gracious way of saying what he likes more (the taste). What he likes can be inferred.
I'm not sure how service in the PS bespoke disqualifies one, my experience has been good. Indeed the overall PS experience is good if a little intense at times (they are trying to sell stuff I suppose)and they probably have the best tie and accessories offering in NYC. Based on the pics this guy's "look" is very nice and recs don't really come much better than Will's even if he dwells on a sartorial plain somewhat higher than most of us (mind you a night on bench in JFK could work wonders!).
I wonder Will, is he a trained tailor or a designer that has the garment made. I like the photos but who is making the garment? Is it true bespoke or MTM? Alas, in Los Angeles there are really no great bespoke tailors.
He is a designer and as I wrote has the garments made to his spec. Just like Alan Flusser, though more conventionally dressed, or myself if I was to offer tailored clothing.
