Video: Designing Bond's Look

Designing Bond's Look from Barbican Centre on Vimeo.

The Barbicon Centre's new James Bond exhibition opened in London this past week. This short video about Bond’s personal style features interviews with award winning costume designer Lindy Hemming and some of the tailors who have been instrumental in shaping and crafting his image over the past 50 years.

David Mason says "Sinclair's tailoring softened the lines a little bit and gave him a more sophisticated look." That's what Daniel Craig needs in order to bring him back closer to Fleming's Bond. Will, have you seen images of the new suits in Skyfall? People seem to like how the tight fit accentuates his muscular build, and they say the suits should indeed show off his muscular build. They also accentuate his shorter stature. But I'm with Sinclair in that a suit should make a muscular man look more elegant.

The difference of course is that Connery was no longer 'muscular' in 1962. Just a tall man with naturally broad shoulders. Which helped him look good in a suit.

If any attempt were made to try and hide Craig's physique with cloth, he'd look blocky and even shorter. Deep down the real gripe of Bond traditionalists is not Craig's clothes, but Craig. I see no reason to bring up 'Fleming's Bond'. All the films diverged from the books. Roger Moore's Bond is nothing like the Bond of the books.

The reason I bring up Fleming is that a lot of people compare him to the literary Bond (probably because he did Casino Royale). I'm not impressed with the tailoring in Skyfall for both the character and the tailoring. Craig himself has nothing to do with it. I find his Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace suits far more flattering than the Skyfall suits, which make him look rather stocky. You don't agree? He was quite muscular in his previous films as well.
