September begins that run of autumnal months that give a man the excuse, should he need one, to stay out until all hours wearing his dinner clothes. Among the dates that deserve attention in San Francisco are September 7 (opening night at the Opera) and September 19 (the Symphony). There are comparable occasions in Los Angeles, Chicago and other cities, including London (September 8 is Last Night at the Proms) and New York (September 24 is the opening of the Metropolitan Opera).
The point of all this of course is that each of us needs to do his part to make the world an ever so slightly more civilized place. And, having done that part, there is no reason not to let our hair down after the formal portion of the evening is over.
Personally, I think a disheveled dinner jacket late at night makes a uniquely civilized statement. Just remember to bring it along when you exit the cab.

Where is your waist covering, Will?
Good observation. That jacket, which is the one I usually wear, is double breasted.m
civilized dishevelment . . . I like it!
Come on, Will: this i snowhere close! The tie needs to be creased and one end needs to be longer than the other; the top shirt button needs to be undone; you need port stains and cigar ash down your shirtfront; twelve hours's stubble on your chin and at least one shoe needs to have been visibly stubbed as you 'alighted' from the cab (nmaybe there shouild be a hole in one trouser knee). And you certainly should not be smiling - at least not so sensibly!
I admit that the shirt button should have been undone. :-)
Since I tilt that way myself, it is amusing, and refreshing, to see Will sporting WHITE braces under black tie, after years of siding against them....

I knew some people at university who would turn up in a ready-tied bow tie, but have a proper one in their pocket just to get that 'look' at the end of the evening.
Will:
I notice that your trouser brace buttons are visible and on the outside edge of the waist, not the inside. Does this signify something of note?
I've never been asked by a tailor whether I want brace buttons on the outside, nor have I ever considered that it would be a good idea to do so.
Brace buttons moved inside the waistband after the disappearance of the vest. They are somewhat easier to button when outside so I have them placed there on trousers that will be worn with a DB or a waistcoat.
