Apparently, doctors are encouraged to avoid long ties, owing to the risk of transference of infections between patients, especially in hospitals.
My father, a chemistry teacher for 66 years, in addition to his fashion forward preference for red Converse All-Star, wore bow-ties his entire life. He explained that the first time the end of his regular neck-tie had found it's way into the sulfuric acid was the last.
