My impression--probably from reading Flusser way back--is that absolutely the key thing with unfinished wood is humidity and otherwise atmospheric control.

Chris had a really good point-- doesn't the material these are made out of contribute to what happens to the suit that hangs on it? I must admit, these are stunning, but wouldn't better materials make them last longer and even keep moths away? I think they are so worth the cost, you should try to get on with a major hotel chain that would buy millions of them for their guests to use.

Please help me understand: I would assume that the hanger should be in in unfinished wood, to help absorb moisture and regulate humidity in the closet? And, in cedar, would keep moths off one's wool clothes..

I bought hangers just like the one you displayed from Brooks Brothers. They have the wide ends to emulate the shoulder, and they are wood with the Brooks engraving on the bottom. I bought them at a factory outlet store for $1.00 a piece. I bought the entire box, and I got 45 hangers for $45.00. I will never get that lucky again!
