I started wearing ascots this year, and no one has looked at me askance. On the contrary, I usually get compliments, though more often than not, it's for my fedora or overall outfit.

As for the alleged affectedness of ascots, look at pictures of Cary Grant in an ascot, and see if he looks as though he has an air of affectation.

there seems to be an awful lot of people wearing ascots out there.

It seems odd to me to note, but I was just this morning thinking of just such a square as you have pictured Will, although I must admit a *pacific* blue ascot never even entered my apparently limited imagination. But to do to this glorious square the indignity of a navy blazer, well, that just leaves me speechless. Rest of outfit great though.
