I love argyle socks, but I always seem to have problems deciding what shirt (dress) to wear with them. I usually give up and wear a white dress shirt. What are the parameters for wearing other patterns and colors with argyle socks?

Is there any advantage at all to mid-calf socks? I find they just won't stay up, so I prefer over-the-calf socks all the time.
